Max applied with thousands of young artists to YoungArts™, a core program of The National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts  (NFAA) which nominates up to 60 candidates for consideration as U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts following participation in YoungArts week. Max received a Silver Medal during YoungArts week and was nominated by NFAA for the US Presidential Scholar Program.

Only 20 performing artists were selected to receive the U.S. Presidential Scholar honor, and Max is one of only two dancers in the entire country in 2011 to receive this prestigious award. Scholars will be recognized for their accomplishments at a White House ceremony and the artists will perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and display their work at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

In addition, each U.S. Presidential Scholar is invited to nominate his or her most inspiring and challenging teacher to travel to Washington, D.C., to receive a Teacher Recognition Award from the U.S. Department of Education and to participate in the recognition events.  We are very proud to say that joining Max in D.C. and receiving a 2011 U.S. Presidential Scholar Program Teacher Recognition Award will be Extensions Dance Company Artistic Director, Lizzie Mackenzie.
